Music Artists Not So Well Known As Indians or With Indian Connections

This Eurovision contest on 26th May 2012, you will hear a singer ‘Engelbert Humperdinck’ as UK’s Entry. You must be wondering who this singer is. Well he was very big name in English Music from 60′ and mid 70’s. He is 76 now and still so young looking but that becomes clear why – he is not alcoholic, though he does not abstain from drinks and he does Karate. But he is half Indian. I do not know though if  he ever felt anything for India though.

Well he was born in Madras and is half Indian due to his mother being Indian. So, an Anglo Indian about whom you were always wondering where have they melted away after India became independent. His best number was Release Me. It grows on you if you were to listen a couple of times. This guy looked in his younger days like Tom Selleck and I reckon much better than him. He sported and still sports sideburns which became the hallmark of Elvis Presley too. Here is one of his concert.

Who is another such name with India Connection . It is Cliff Richards. He was born in Lucknow, India. He is the only British artist who has had no1 singles every decade since 50’s.

He is yet another Anglo Indian with youthful looks. He plays Tennis even now at 71 years of age.

The biggest recent name is not of an Anglo-Indian but a Parsee Indian who spent his  youth in Gujrat, Mahrastra(Mumbai etc) even though he was born in Zanzibar, Tanzania Africa. But sadly this singer is no more. This lead singer of Group ‘Queen’ was known as Freddie Mercury.

In 2002, Mercury was placed at number 58 in the BBC’s poll of the 100 Greatest Britons He remains in the memory of millions.

But not just popular music – big name from India in western classical music comes in the name of another Parsee – Zubin Mehta who is from Mumbai.

He is peddling his trade as a philharmonic conductor across the world. His calendar even now remains very busy and full always. He had worked as the main conductor in Austria, UK, US, Canada and in israel where he is the life long conductor. He is 76 too.

Last artist mentioned here had Anglo Indian roots but did not use those for English Music but for Indian music. You may not have heard the name of India’s first ever disk artist. She was Gauhar Jaan who

recorded in Indian classical music. Well before the Lata Mangeshkar, India’s biggest shining star recorded in so many languages, Gauhar Jaan recorded more than 600 records from 1902 to 1920, in more than ten languages. So, India has been contributing profoundly to so many tastes over the ages that seem like eons.
